His Master’s Voice Silenced

On January 15, HMV plc entered receivership, and the hmv.com website displayed a simple legal notice. Stores in Ireland were shuttered.
Several views of His Master’s Voice/HMV in Oxford Street, London, in the 1960’s.

The original painting of Nipper by Francis Barraud; the trademark used by Victor (later RCA Victor) and HMV substituted a disc gramophone for the wax-cylinder machine.

The Old Wolf has spoken.

  1. Merrifield, VA, used to be a rural area. Then urban creep took over. But for years, there was a hold-out farmhouse with a bunch of outbuildings. It also had a sculpture or something of the painting you show above. I think it must have been about ten feet tall, because it was back from the road but easily visible. That whole property was taken over by townhouses. 😦 I sure hope somebody preserved the dog and record player!

  2. I was at the HMV store on Oxford Street in London as recent as a year ago, come March. Absolutely huge place. Sad that it’s been destined to keep the Dodo company. On the up side, though, now the Dodo will never run out of listening material.
