Sadly, as with so many amazing things, the truth is slightly less amazingly amazing than first sight appearances may suggest. Now, I’m not saying that it isn’t an über-cool photograph, because it certainly is.
Gawker had to issue an update to their story: “Boo. An Omaha World-Herald reporter did some snooping around and discovered that the photo above only shows one manhole flame. The rest are streetlight reflections.”
That’s not the whole story, mind you. The snooping reporter produced an article surrounding the search for answers to questions of what, where, how and, not least, who, regarding that photo. It makes for a delightful read.
