To my “forward-happy” friends

I love you guys. You know I do. So don’t think I’m dissing you or getting on your case. But there are a few things I’d like all of my friends and family to understand.

First:

snopes

If it’s not true, don’t send it, unless it’s just a nice, uplifting story; in that case, label it as such.

(PS – this applies to Facebook posts, too.)

Second:

BCC

Your Grandma Pensilthea probably doesn’t want her email address distributed to 100 other people. She will hunt you down and kill you in your sleep.

Third:

Good Luck

If something you want to send to your friends has this bit of nonsense at the end, delete it before sending it on. You can’t really believe that good fortune depends on how many people you send an email to, now can you? We make our own luck in this world by what we choose to do.

That’s all. It’s very simple. If everyone would do these three things, the quantity of  emails in our inboxes would go down, and the quality would go way up.

The Old Wolf has spoken.

  1. The Best way I’ve found to train people to check out the content before forwarding it on is to always send it back marked “This Is FALSE.” Attach proof – the Snopes documentation and a few others, a retraction from a named primary source is best. And a note about how BCC works.

But this is the important part: You only send it back to the sender politely and quietly Once. if this is a second or third repeat offense, you send it back politely again – And on to the other 300 people on the open list.

If you only rebuke the offender in private, the truly clueless won’t stop. Or they take you off their list and keep sending to everyone else they know. That is when you use the ‘Clue By Four’ to get the message across…

  2. I’ve only had to do the “reply all” option once. Usually by the second or third Snopes pointer, people get the message and remove me from their list. Only one has responded that he doesn’t care if things are true or not, he’s going to send stuff on anyway. It’s not really worth trying to filter his mail to spam, because in all other respects he’s a capital fellow.
