A contract is a contract, but Gold’s Gym is evil.

Cross-posted from LiveJournal entry of 11/09/2010

Gold’s Gym has one of the most ironclad contracts in the business, according to my attorney. Back in 2008, I signed up at a location in Salt Lake City, and two weeks later my life situation changed drastically and I could no longer afford the membership. They stuck like epoxy to their 3-day recission clause and would not budge an inch. When I changed my credit card to stop the automatic billing, they came after me with their collection lawyers and threatened to sue, and to ruin my credit (which was in the toilet anyway, but that’s beside the point.) I wrote this post in 2010 once the terms of my contract had been fulfilled and I could get this off my chest.

This outfit is iconic of everything that is wrong with corporate America.

I wish I could have done something like this, which was brilliant: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1K3gkRHTF8/

My takeaways:

  • “Legal” does not always mean “Right”; Hell is full of such penurious moneygrubbers.
  • Read Your Contract Carefully Before Signing.

I will never, ever, ever do business with Gold’s Gym again, and I advise you to do likewise, and tell all your friends the same. Find a gymnasium that works on a month-to-month basis.¹

The Old Wolf has spoken.

Footnotes

¹ Apparently some outlets do offer month-to-month memberships. This doesn’t change my feelings about how I was treated by this corporation.
