Beware the IRS Impersonation Scam

Rule No. 1: The IRS will never call you to demand immediate payment of taxes. Ever. If anyone on the phone claims to be from the IRS, threatening to have you arrested if you don’t immediately wire money or get a prepaid card, they are criminals and it is a scam.

Scammers have become far more aggressive with this particular gambit of late, and it would be important to be aware of what’s happening. Forewarned is forearmed.

IRS-Impersonation Telephone Scam

An aggressive and sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, has been making the rounds throughout the country. Callers claim to be employees of the IRS, but are not. These con artists can sound convincing when they call. They use fake names and bogus IRS identification badge numbers. They may know a lot about their targets, and they usually alter the caller ID to make it look like the IRS is calling.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

Or, victims may be told they have a refund due to try to trick them into sharing private information.

If the phone isn’t answered, the scammers often leave an “urgent” callback request.

Note that the IRS will never: 1) call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill; 2) demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe; 3) require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card; 4) ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone; or 5) threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.

A cousin of mine was targeted by these drones, and despite the scammers themselves most likely being in another country, this was doubly frightening because they had accomplices in place who actually appeared at her door with badges and threatened her on the spot.

If this ever happens to you, let no one in and call the police.

Some even more diabolical scammers were frustrated that their victim wouldn’t pay up and swatted them. This refers to prank 911 calls, or the unholy practice of getting police or a SWAT team to show up at someone else’s house. Not only is this terrifying for the victim, and can result in lasting psychological harm and other logistical difficulties, but it’s a terrible waste of police resources. The scammers, however, don’t care.

Be prepared by knowing that the IRS will never try to force you to pay up with these aggressive tactics. If you’re called like this, hang up immediately and notify the police.

  • INTERPOL will never contact you from Benin. There’s ample evidence that people from Nigeria and Benin have been collaborating with these scams for over a decade.
  • NEVER send money to strangers anywhere, in Africa or the US or anywhere else, via Western Union, MoneyGram, or Green Dot Money Pak Card. Ever. Just don’t.

Ongoing scams from Benin

A new scam email from “Mr. Sarawut Gan,” but using the same return address as “Dr. Graham Honnse” from the IRS.

I have not yet figured out if the scammers in Nigeria have just moved to Benin – it’s only 122 km from Lagos to Cotonou – hoping to avoid the obvious unsavory connection, or if the Boys from Benin are trying to piggy-back onto the success of the Lads from Lagos. Almost all my scam emails these days are from Benin, and precious few from Nigeria.

Whatever the case, stay far away from emails like this. There is no money waiting for you in Africa; the USA would never send official communications from Benin or any other country, nor would they ask you to wire money using Western Union, Money Gram, or any other service.

How Blog Spam is Generated

I’ve talked about blog spam a lot, because I get a lot of it here. Akismet takes most of the pain away automatically, for which I love them, but the occasional piece of camel ejecta filters through which I must designate as spam manually.

I happened to browse the comments on another blog post today, and I found the following script core, posted by a less-than-careful blog spammer. Something went wrong, and instead of delivering a single randomized comment, the entire database was posted. I thought this was interesting, because I have received/seen pieces of this script in my own blog and many others.

I’m sharing it because I thought you might find it interesting as well.

Just posting this in case anyone else gets this fraudulent email and does a search on the information. Please note the following facts:

  • You can never win a lottery you did not enter
  • There are no “international tombolas,” or lotteries that choose winners from random emails
  • NEVER pay money to collect a prize of any sort.
  • Participating in overseas lotteries is illegal in many countries anyway, particularly the USA. The Irish Lottery and the Spanish Gordo are two favorite cover stories for liars, thieves, scammers, and hqiz-eaters.
  • Again we see a (+44 70) prefix. THIS IS NOT A UK NUMBER: If you call it, you’re speaking to someone in Nigeria or elsewhere in Africa, in all likelihood.

Be careful out there. The number of people out there who want your hard-earned money and who will stop at nothing to get it is rising as the Internet becomes more accessible to larger sections of third-world countries.

I’ve commented multiple times on the kinds of spam comments that appear in this blog on a regular basis. I just got another comment from one of my “regulars.”

Hmm it seemjs like your website ate my first comment (it was extremely long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I submitted and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying yur blog. I as well am aan aspiring blog writer buut I’m still new to everything. Do you havbe any points for inexperienced blogg writers? I’d certainly appreciatge it.

Here’s my response, which (s)he will most likely never see, since these comments are blasted out by bots, but regardless:

I’m not interested in garcinia cambogia (a veritable deluge of these recently), porn, “lista de email” (very popular spamming services in Brazil), knockoff products (notably from China and Japan), forex trading, penny stock scams, pirated movies, counterfeit Viagra, or anything else you’re hawking. I’m not interested in being a cog in your black-hat SEO machine. You are irrelevant to the human race.
